The Pirates of Penzance

The Pirates of Penzance
or The Slave of Duty

Following the success of their 20th anniversary season, the New London Opera Group begins its third decade with an all-new production of one of Gilbert and Sullivan's best-loved operas, The Pirates of Penzance.
Frederic, apprenticed as a boy to a pirate crew, renounces his life of crime and vows to live an honest life with his new love Mabel, but he soon learns that living on the right side of the law is not as easy as he'd thought. Especially not when his former crew, led by the fearsome Pirate King, arrive to make off with his new fiancé's sisters, incurring the wrath of a very modern Major-General! As the pirates prepare to do battle with the local constabulary, Frederic wrestles with his conscience - will he stay loyal to his old crew, or help the Major-General put an end to the infamous Pirates of Penzance?

The opera is brimming with some of Arthur Sullivan's biggest and best tunes including "Poor wan'dring one", "A policeman’s lot is not a happy one” and "With cat-like tread". Paired with WS Gilbert's hilarious libretto and vivid characters, NewLOG's new production of The Pirates of Penzance is a swashbuckling summer treat.

Looking around the modern day West End you'd be hard pressed not to see advertisements for a musical that first began it's life on the silver screen. From Back to The Future to Mrs Doubtfire. The Devil Wears Prada to The Lion King. Moulin Rouge to Hercules. The idea of taking an already classic film and transforming it into an all singing, all dancing musical extravaganza has really soared over the last decade, but you'll be surprised how many classic and firm favourite shows also fall into this genre!

Could we be performing songs from your favourite? There's only one way to find out!

Join us as our talented cast of performers take you on a journey through 32 of the best songs from this exciting sub genre of theatrical delight! Tickets always sell fast for our summer concert so please book early to avoid disappointment.

**As we go to print the setlist has yet to be confirmed so songs from the aforementioned shows may not appear**

to 8 Nov

Nunsense

Nunsense is a Musical Comedy that begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials.

The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease.” An unholy amount of comedy ensues as we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.

Wacky and outrageous with a hysterical ‘anything goes’ sense of fun, Nunsense is a heavenly delight!
