New London Opera Group Spring Concert
Saturday 23rd February 2019
Tickets £14, TheatreCards £12.50
The New London Opera Group is delighted to start its 15th Anniversary Season with a new production of Sir Lennox Berkeley’s hilarious musical farce A Dinner Engagement. First performed in 1954, A Dinner Engagement is set around a dinner party given by the hapless Earl and Countess of Dunmow, who are desperate to marry their daughter off to a visiting European prince. However, they have fallen on hard times and most of their staff have walked out. The Earl and Countess rise to the occasion by deciding to cook the meal themselves, aided only by their char lady, Mrs Kneebone! The witty libretto is matched by Berkeley’s charming score which sparkles like champagne, with moments of tender romance and riotous comedy.
The second half of the evening will be a celebration of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, which have always formed the backbone of the New London Opera Group’s repertoire. Featuring a host of popular favourites from HMS Pinafore, The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance among others, the concert will be a perfect springtime treat for music lovers.
